Large Number of Pre-paid Subscribers Unverified

Coming down heavily on mobile phone operators across the country, the government has said that over 40% of pre-paid mobile subscribers did not fully meet the requirement of subscriber verification, leading to violation of instructions by the service providers.

Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communication and IT in a written reply in the Lok Sabha added that it was observed that about 60 per cent of pre-paid subscribers and 93 per cent of the post-paid users fully met the requirement of subscriber verification.

The results come from a sample study undertaken by the DoT to verify whether operators were following the instructions on verification before issuing a connection.
