Gas Shortage In The Offering as ONGC Stops Production

Floods in Gujarat have forced the state-owned ONGC to shut down wells after its facilities were inundated by up to 10 ft of water.

According to the Chairman and Managing Director R S Sharma, Oil and Natural Gas Corp's (ONGC) Hazira gas processing complex was flooded forcing the company to shut down the facility, which received gas from the company's Bassein and Panna/Mukta and Tapti fields in Mumbai offshore.

ONGC's Bassein field produced only gas and so the oil production was not impacted. The company's oil output (and also gas) from its Mumbai High field goes to Uran in Maharashtra, which was operating normally.

The fear is that if this situation continues for a long it would have a negative impact on the distribution of gas even in places as far as New Delhi.
