Another SEZ Controversy Erupts In Goa

By Indiapressagency.com on October 03,2006

It seems that SEZ has become synonymous with controversies and adding another chapter to the already long list of controversies, the Goa government is now engaged in a war of sorts with the University of Goa over the land set aside for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to be set up by IT major Wipro.

The Goa government had earmarked the land for allotment to IT major Wipro for setting up the SEZ. But the Goa University has now come forward claiming that the 1 lakh sq meters of land actually belongs to it. This has sparked off a row between the University and the Goa government.

The Goa University is the only university in the state and the staff feels that in its zeal to see the SEZ project through, the government is sending out wrong signals over the importance it attaches to the Higher Educational System in the state.
